Ellen Butterfield has been a licensed Marriage and Family Therapist in Los Angeles since 1996. She has trained at the Pacific Gestalt Institute, and is a founding member of a longstanding Gestalt study and consultation group. Her approach is relational and dialogic, and her attitude is one of respect for each individual, with integrity, empathy and sensitivity. Besides providing therapy, Ellen also is a supervisor for intern therapists.
In addition to individual therapy, for adults, children and teens, she facilitates groups for people suffering from the trauma of divorce, and provides therapy for children of divorce. Ellen draws on her many years’ experience in the movie and television industry to help actors and writers to understand themselves, maximize their creativity and increase their career success. In addition, as the survivor of a husband who died of cancer, her unique insight allows her to be effective in understanding and helping patients deal with the loss or illness of loved ones.
In couple’s counseling, partners learn tools to deal with each other and their relationship, and to resolve longstanding issues.
One of the main payoffs of effective therapy is that a person feels understood, and truly connected with and supported, sometimes for the first time in his or her life. Whether you are in the middle of a crisis, or just feel you need to take charge of your life and make some positive changes, therapy can give you the tools you need to help you become the best "you" possible.
A former patient speaks of doing therapy with Ellen as being like "talking to a good friend but a friend who is trained to help me see what I'm doing in a way that a friend can't or won't."
